Kratom Powder Or Leaf, Which Is Better (According to Science)?

Kratom Powder Or Leaf, Which Is Better (According to Science)?

So, you’ve decided that you want to give Kratom a try. You’ve heard that it can do wonders for your energy levels, your stress levels, and even your aches and pains. Now it’s time to decide exactly which Kratom product is right for you and your unique needs.

Although most Kratom comes in powder or capsule form, it starts out life as a leaf. The Kratom tree, Mitragyna Speciose Korth, is an evergreen that grows wild in South East Asia. The vast majority of Kratom is imported from this part of the world.

Kratom Leaf

Let’s start our review of Kratom powder with a look at the source – the Kratom leaf. As we said, the Kratom tree is evergreen, so the leaves are strong and a bit tough. Kratom leaves don’t taste too good, so they need to be made into a tea or crushed and eaten with something like apple sauce or yogurt.

Leaves do vary a lot both in their strength and their freshness – after all, Kratom is a natural product. When using leaves, it’s very hard to know just how much Kratom you are using. Outside of South East Asia, it can be hard to get nice fresh leaves. In the west, we often end up being offered dried up, unappetizing leaves.

Leaves have to be chewed, chopped up and mixed with food or liquids, smoked, or steeped to make a tea. So there are all the processes of digestion to take into consideration when figuring out the effect that the Kratom is going to have on you. Smoking or eating Kratom leaves will give you a faster effect, whereas Kratom tea takes longer for the Kratom to hit the bloodstream and take effect on your system.

But Aren’t leaves More Natural?

Some people like the idea of leaves because they seem natural. But Kratom powders are derived directly from leaves, and so they are only one step away from the natural product. The quality of leaves is much more variable than that of extracts and powders. Kratom powders are made under laboratory conditions and the end product is consistent, batch to batch. Leaves do have an advantage in that they probably contain more of the antioxidant properties of Kratom. These may be lost in the process of making an extract or a powder. People may also enjoy the rituals of making Kratom tea, or Kratom laced foods. For them, it is part of the stimulating or soothing process of using Kratom.

If you are confident in your supplier, Kratom leaves may have their place in your life. For most people though, powder or extract is much more convenient and enjoyable to use.

What Is Kratom Powder?

Kratom powder is simply the dried Kratom leaf which is crushed to form a powder. In powder form, Kratom is easier to use and more palatable. Kratom powder comes with different levels of fineness, but there is not a great deal of difference between finer and coarser powders. Quality can vary a lot, depending on the quality and age of the original leaf, so it is a good idea to find a reliable product that comes with good recommendations from other Kratom users.

What Is Kratom Extract?

Whereas Kratom powder is simply, as the name suggests, Kratom leaves which have been reduced to a fine powder, Kratom extract is prepared differently.

Kratom extract is made from boiled Kratom leaves or powder, and the resulting liquid is strained and further boiled down, giving a concentrated paste that is dark in color. The paste which derives from this process is very rich in alkaloids.

This paste is then left to dry and is further ground down to make a fine powder. This powder can be identified as Kratom extract, rather than simple Kratom powder, by its much darker color. It will also have a distinctly sharp smell. This is due to the fact that the alkaloids in the Kratom have been concentrated.

Kratom extract is stronger than Kratom powder. Strength is usually indicated by a number or ratio, for example, 2X or 2:1, meaning double the strength of the same quantity of Kratom powder.

Kratom extract can be as much as fifteen times as strong as Kratom powder, so it is very important that you don’t get confused between the two. Taking Kratom extract in the same dosage as you would take Kratom powder could have very negative effects on your health, although science does not report any deaths from a Kratom overdose.

How Should I Compare Kratom Extract And Kratom Powder?

As you might expect, Kratom extract is more expensive than Kratom powder. This is because it simply takes more work, and more raw Kratom leaves, to produce the same quantity.

If you want to compare Kratom extract with Kratom powder, it’s a good idea to compare products from the same supplier. In this way, you can be sure that both products, although different, have been produced to the same standard, and probably from very similar raw materials.

This means that the product test will be fair, and you will be able to decide which product offers you the best experience and the best value for money.

How Does Kratom Dosage Differ Between Extract And Powder?

The answer is very simple. If you look at the dosage for Kratom powder, in order to get a similar effect from Kratom extract, you divide by the strength level of the extract.

So let’s say your Kratom powder dosage is 5 grams. Is you are using 5:1 ratio extract you would divide that 5 grams by the strength of the extract, which is 5. That would give you an extract dose of 1 gram.

Remember always that different types of Kratom will produce different effects at different dosages. Sounds complicated? Well, yes, a little. But if you always follow the supplier’s direction in detail, you can’t go wrong. Remember if you are new to a product, always start out by taking a little less than the suggested dose, and checking your reactions. This is the mature and sensible approach to Kratom and one which will, in the end, increase your enjoyment of the Kratom experience.

Kratom Extract Or Kratom Powder – Which Is The Best?

There isn’t a simple answer to this question. Actually the answer is, “It depends.” It depends on whether you are an experienced user or a beginner. If you are a beginner, it’s generally a good idea to start off by using Kratom powder. It’s not as strong, and it is quite versatile in the ways that you can use it.

Until you understand how your unique body reacts to Kratom, the powder is the easiest and best way to go. It’s easy to measure, and you can mix it with food or drink or take it with a spoon.

If you are a more experienced user, you might find that Kratom extract is more satisfying for you. For the beginner, Kratom extract might just be too strong. If you start out using extract, there is a possibility that you will build up a tolerance to Kratom very quickly. The more experienced user will have a better grasp of what Kratom does to him or her and will enjoy the quick rush that the extract offers.

How To Make Kratom Extract From Kratom Powder

This is easier than you might think to do in your very own kitchen. You will need Kratom powder, lime juice, alcohol, and a Ball glass jar or similar.

Mix the Kratom powder, the lime juice and the alcohol (vodka works well) into a paste. Place the Ball jar, sealed so that the ring is just fingertip tight, in hot water in a container such as a saucepan. Bring it to the boil it on your stove, allow it to sit in the boiling water for a minute or two, and then strain the resulting paste. You now have Kratom Extract, of a very simple kind.

Kratom Powder Or Crushed Kratom Leaf?

Another alternative for the Kratom user is crushed Kratom leaf. There is not a great deal of difference in the strength of Kratom powder when compared with crushed Kratom leaf. Crushed Kratom leaf is a little more versatile. It can be smoked, for example, and used to make tea. Kratom powder is usually used in a capsule, or simply eaten with a spoon. The same weight of Kratom crushed leaf and powder will be very similar in strength, although as you may use them slightly differently, the speed with which they affect you will differ a bit.

How Long Does The Effect Of Kratom Powder Last?

Of course, the answer to this question depends on how strong the powder is, the amount taken, the age and build of the user, and on a person’s individual response to Kratom. But as a rule of thumb, you can go by the following guidelines:

The effects of Kratom in the body can be detected for five to six days. (Kratom is rarely part of any drug screening protocol). If a blood test for Kratom was taken, the effects could be seen for up to four days in blood. For a urine test, it would be detectable for up to seven days. People using Kratom infrequently might have a faster time for its elimination from their body.

The initial Kratom high will probably begin at around fifteen to twenty minutes after the dose is taken, with the peak experience being around one and a half to two hours later, depending very much on the type of Kratom used and the amount taken. The overall effects will generally last around five hours. If Kratom is taken on an empty stomach, the effects will be faster. If it’s taken in capsule form then they will be a little slower as the capsule has to be digested before the Kratom takes effect.

Of course, if a person is taking a very small dose, for example, as an early morning tea before heading off for work, the feeling will be that of being perked up, rather than some kind of drug-induced haze!

Is Kratom Powder Safe?

Like anything, Kratom powder can be abused and misused. But there are millions of ordinary people of all ages and in all walks of life who use it to relieve chronic pain, to help with depression or stress, or for simple recreational use.

For most people, occasional use of Kratom powder at low doses seems to be relatively harmless. If you are considering trying a higher dose, which might have a strong sedative effect, then it is a very good idea to have a friend on hand who is completely sober, as there can be a danger that you fall into a deep sleep and vomit. It should be stressed that this is a rare occurrence, but better safe than sorry.

As an alternative to opioids, Kratom powder does seem to offer relief for chronic pain, and in view of the current opioid crisis, it does look like a welcome and viable addition to the range of treatments available. As a way to relax and improve your outlook on life, well, there are over 15 million Kratom users in the US who can testify to its effectiveness and ease of use.
