Myths and Truths of Using Kratom as an Energy Source

For those who want an energy boost, chances are that you already have coffee on your mind; it is the most common energy source worldwide. The coffee industry, however, is laden with multinational corporations that, most of the time, cause more harm in the world than good. This has caused a large number of people all over the globe to start turning away from coffee as the main source of energy, turning their energy onto some other natural products like cannabis and Kratom. Kratom is a relative of coffee, and its use as a source of energy is more preferred when compared to cannabis.

On the 24th of August 2021, Thailand legalized the use, sale, or purchase of Kratom, which people have used for a long time as an herbal remedy. This is a bold step, considering that many health regulators worldwide have been criticizing it as having the potential to be unsafe. In the United States, however, the trend has been positively appealing, with many states having decriminalized it already. Those yet to have mostly drawn up potential legislations that will control its usage and trade to affirm quality to the consumer and avoid sales to underaged people.

Some states have legalized it, others have not yet included it in the lawbooks, and others have banned it. Its legality is thus mostly determined by where you live. Legalization invites an increase in regulation, but that has not stopped such movements as the Kratom Consumer Protection Act (KCPA) from protecting its legality. They have worked tirelessly with legislators in the various states to ensure requirements like age are set.

Some states have enacted the act as a way of protecting the consumers from products that are not regulated, such as fentanyl, synthetic Kratom, and other ingredients that might be dangerous. Four states, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and Georgia, have passed the bills. Others like Oregon are on the way to legalization, though in a way that ensures a more regulated flow of Kratom. In some states, though, things have turned out for the worst for Kratom users due to bans. Such include Wisconsin, Indiana, Arkansas, Alabama, Vermont, and Rhode Island.

At the federal level, Kratom is not regulated, which means that there are no governing bodies that check or guarantee the consumer of safe and quality Kratom products in the United States. However, its side effects and ability to be addictive have attracted the attention of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), which has been considering labeling it as a controlled substance.

Some myths surrounding using Kratom as an energy source need to be confronted and stats exemplified if the product is to make it to the law's good side, not just in the US but worldwide. Some of these include:

The stimulating properties of Kratom work as those of coffee: this is a false claim

Mitragyna speciosa is a coffee family (Rubiaceae) member, but the stimulating effects that it gives out are due to the presence of 7-hydroxy mitragynine and mitragynine, and not caffeine, the chemical ingredient most active in coffee. One more upside to using Kratom in place of coffee is that it will not give you the jitters or make you run in circles when taken in a high dosage, as is the case with coffee; the most likely outcome is relaxation.

  • The use of Kratom as an energy source is a trend that has emerged lately: this is a false claim.

It is undeniable that many people who consume Kratom worldwide use the herb as a pain reliever. However, replacing your cup of coffee in the morning with Kratom is not such an innovative idea. Records indicate that laborers in Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia have been chewing leaves of the Kratom plant to increase their stamina, endurance, and energy since around the mid-1800s. This helped them to cope with the long days of work. Malaysian students also frequently used Kratom tea to concentrate well in school.

In the West, the US included, most consumers use Kratom as a source of energy to boost motivation and be more productive in their daily activities. Kratom is well known as a nootropic substance, which means it can offer required help in mental clarity and focus while also causing a boost in your energy levels and sense of wellbeing.

  • Stimulation from Kratom occurs when taken at low doses: this is true.

For those who boast of familiarity with the pharmacology and origins of Kratom, you can bear witness that its use is stimulating when taken at low dosages and sedating when the dose is high. This is great for those looking forward to using Kratom as an energy source; you will, with time, generate less tolerance for it and consume less of the product, which means you will use less money to meet your needs. For those who want to use Kratom for energy but have not done so before, the advisable dosage is 1-2 grams, but for those experienced users, 2-4 grams might be the most standard dosage.

  • Some Kratom strains can give you more energy than others: this is true

All the different strains of Kratom provide some level of stimulation, but they provide very distinct qualities that will appeal to different users. Some strains work well in relieving pain, and others have more euphoric effects.

Some other myths that have been standing in the general acceptance of Kratom into the normal way of life are:

  • Kratom is dangerous

As the authorities might have you believe, there is no scientific basis for Kratom being an inherently dangerous drug. However, this is not a denial of risks like side effects and interactions with other medications. So far, no one has reported a death resulting purely from Kratom, unless other drugs were involved or an underlying health condition.

  • People overdose on Kratom

The claim by the FDA that Kratom is leading to overdoses is a faulty and rash conclusion. The logic followed is that since the actual possibility of one overdosing on pharmaceutical opioid agonists is high, Kratom being an opioid agonist, must also lead to overdoses. This argument falls flat because there has not been a single reported incidence where one overdosed on Kratom alone. This is a plant with a wide variety of active ingredients, unlike prescription drugs that by design, have a single active ingredient that can target a specific receptor. The good thing about Kratom is its dose's self-limiting action, preventing an overdose; taking too much of it will cause you to feel bad and throw up before achieving the lethal dose of 547.7mg/kg, compared to that of oxycodone, a common opioid that is also a prescription drug. Its lethal dose stands at 0.14mg/kg.

  • Kratom is not addictive.

Most vendor sites claim that Kratom is not addictive to entice new users into trying it out. This is a misleading piece of information that might contribute to tarnishing the already battered name regarding Kratom consumption. The truth is that, although it is less addictive than some of the substances it replaces, such as benzodiazepines and opiates, it can induce tolerance and dependence over time.
